India are closing in on 100 medals at the Asian Para Games 2023.
After a historic Asian Games campaign, India have continued to make more history following another wonderful performance in this year’s Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China. The fourth edition of the competition got officially underway with medal events on October 22. Even though, it comes to a close on October 28, India have already achieved its best medal tally in the history of this competition with 99 medals.
On Thursday, India went past its previous-best gold medal tally from the 2018 Asian Games where they had claimed 72 medals. Prior to that, India had won 14 medals at the 2010 edition and 33 in 2014. In the inaugural edition at Guangzhou, India had managed just one gold medal. That number went up to 15 in Indonesia and in this year’s Asian Games, India have recorded 25 golds already.
So far, India have notched up 29 silvers and 45 bronze medals to add to its tally of 25 golds, taking the total tally to 99. They are currently sixth in the standings behind hosts China (499), Republic of Iran (115), Japan (135), South Korea (95), and Indonesia (79). In Jakarta, India had finished ninth in the overall medals tally.
Also, much like the Asian Games, track and field events have been successful endeavours for India at the Asian Para Games as well. Ahead of the 2023 edition, India had won a total of 119 medals of which 60 came from athletics.
The spike in medals was expected as the country managed to send 303 athletes - 191 men and 112 women - making it the largest contingent from India at the continental event. At the 2018 Asian Para Games, India had sent 190 athletes and returned with 72 medals, including 15 gold.
With another day of events left, India are poised to finish with over 100 medals which had been the primary objective for the Asian Para Games. India had also managed to cross the glorious three-figure-mark at the Asian Games, finishing with a historic tally of 107 medals.
