Following Tottenham Hotspur’s 6-1 humiliation at the hands of Newcastle United in the Premier League, interim coach and Antonio Conte’s Cristian Stellini has been sacked from his position.
Tottenham Hotspur have decided to part ways with interim manager Cristian Stellini on Monday. The club announced the decision on social media with chairman Daniel Levy calling Sunday’s 6-1 loss to Newcastle United in the Premier League ‘wholly unacceptable.’
Stellini had only been appointed as manager after his former boss Antonio Conte left the club. Stellini had previously been the assistant manager to the Italian. He will now be replaced by Ryan Mason with immediate effect.
The 48-year-old managed to win only one of his four games in charge as the interim coach of Tottenham Hotspur and the poor run of form could deal a fatal blow to the club’s chances of qualifying for Champions League football by the end of the season.
The London-based club are fifth in the Premier League table but are six points adrift of the top four and have played at least one game more than the sides directly above them.
What was already proving to be a difficult and tumultous season, hit a new low, as Tottenham conceded five goals inside the first 21 minutes at St. James Park against Newcastle United.
"Sunday's performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable," said Levy in a club statement.
"Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time."
However, what has triggered and prompted criticism from the fanbase is the lack of forward thinking given that Levy decided to replace Conte with a member of his own backroom staff.
"We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine," Levy added.
"I met with the player committee today - the squad is determined to pull together to ensure the strongest possible finish to the season. We are all clear we need to deliver performances which earn your amazing support."
This is not the first time that Ryan Mason is being asked to come to Tottenham’s rescue on such a short notice. Mason had also been asked to take charge towards the end of the 2020/21 season and he will be on the dugout, leading Spurs in their clash against Manchester United on Thursday.
The disarray at Tottenham has once again prompted speculations surrounding the future of their captain and England striker Harry Kane. He has just one year left on his contract and is attracting plenty of attention from Bayern Munich and Manchester United.
The club's managing director of football Fabio Paratici also resigned last week after losing his appeal against a 30-month global ban from performing his role.
Paratici was handed the suspension by the Italian football federation (FIGC) in January after his former club Juventus were found guilty of false accounting.
